Dr Hamish Fraser and colleagues received a grant from the Agency for Healthcare Policy and Research (AHRQ) in July 2023 for $1.8M to research tools to help patients with diagnosis in the home or community setting. The 5 year grant entitled “Evaluating diagnostic decision support systems for patients requiring urgent primary or emergency care or with stroke” will build on existing work in Dr Fraser’s lab to study the use of diagnostic apps called symptom checkers and new algorithms by patients. The goal of the work is to reduce misdiagnosis and late recognition of serious conditions like stroke by patients, which can lead to poorer outcomes. Additional goals include determining the effectiveness, ease of use and safety of existing mobile apps and algorithms including large Language Models like ChatGPT. Co-Investigators at Brown University are Dr Tracy Madsen, Dr Tyler Wray, Dr Drew Nagle, and Dr Michael Reznik. Co-Investigators who were recently at Brown are Dr Megan Ranney, Dr Ross Hilliard and Dr Carsten Eickhoff, and investigators from Ada Health Inc in Germany.
