About

BCBI was built around charges to innovate, implement, and inspire through research, education, and service.

The Brown Center for Biomedical Informatics logoBrown Center for Biomedical Informatics (BCBI) was established in July 2015 by Elizabeth Chen, PhD, FACMI (Interim Director and Founding Associate Director) and Indra Neil Sarkar, PhD, MLIS, FACMI (Founding Director) with the aspiration to become an internationally renowned leader in the development and application of biomedical informatics approaches. While methodological research and education form the foundation of BCBI, the overall success is based on the impact of BCBI-led innovations on biomedical discovery and healthcare delivery.

From its start, BCBI was built around charges to innovate, implement, and inspire through research, education, and service. The mission of BCBI has been enhanced to:

  • Innovate how data, computing, and technology are used in biomedicine and health care;
  • Implement digital solutions for improving biomedical discovery and healthcare delivery;
  • Impact health and health care through data- and technology-driven solutions; and,
  • Inspire the next generation of biomedical researchers, healthcare providers, and consumers.

BCBI is located in the historic Jewelry District of Providence, Rhode Island on the Second Floor of 233 Richmond Street, which is adjacent to The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

BCBI works in close partnership with collaborators in existing areas of excellence at Brown University, its healthcare affiliates, academic and healthcare organizations across Rhode Island, and beyond.
